History of Indonesia Arabica Green Coffee Beans

The history of Indonesian Arabica coffee plantations began in 1696 during the Dutch occupation. Although it is not a native plant, the archipelago has fertile soil appropriate for Arabica coffee cultivation. The plantation started in Batavia (now Jakarta), then spread to other islands of Sumatra and Sulawesi in the 1700s.

However, there was a problem with growing Indonesia specialty coffee in Indonesia. Several years later, coffee rust disease almost annihilated all Arabica coffee types, which led to changing the plantations to cultivate Robusta coffee. Right now, Arabica coffee plants survive and contribute to around 15% of total coffee production in Indonesia.
